About Manado

Welcome to Manado city, North Sulawesi. Manado is on the island of Sulawesi and is located in the northernmost part. A friendly town with a smiley person. The land itself has many coral reefs that attract divers from all over the world. The active volcano is a constant reminder to the people about the earth’s extraordinary power. This area is also known by locals as an oil palm area because most of the coconut plantations cover the coastline.

Manado population is 750,264 people (2010). The entire population of North Sulawesi is 3,189,273. Manado is the starting point for exploring the various attractions in Minahasa. Interestingly, the Minahasa people live in neat wooden frame houses, with fences and flower gardens, giving Manado a European feeling. There are various hotels and restaurants available. Those who have adventurers should try the famous and spicy Minahasa cuisine. Many shops and markets in this city are filled with consumer goods and abundant agricultural produce.

Outback from Manado, a journey through the Minahasa Highlands will take you to funeral sites in interesting prehistoric lands, volcanoes, hot springs, high altitude lakes such as Lake Tondano and Lake Linow which are very interesting especially panoramic views of mountain, coffee and coconut plantations, and so do orchid gardens and hillside terraces. From Manado, also make sure to visit Tangkoko Dua Saudara Nature Reserve, home to birds and other wildlife unique to Sulawesi, such as Tarsius - the smallest monkey, Cus Cus, hornbill, etc.

The Dutch missionaries built the first Christian church in Manado called Oude Kerk (Old church), which still stands and is now called Gereja Sentrum. The HMS Dover captured Manado in June 1810.
